Creating Space
One of the most limiting things in older homes is the amount of available space one has to work with.
I am pleased to say that I have created many different custom pieces that increased the usable space in an older home. One of the main priorities is to elevate things from the floor. This can be done, for example, by the creation of a bar in the kitchen, a telephone shelf in the hallway or a shelving unit in the study. Exploiting the vertical potentials in a restricted area is the key to creating more space.
An equally important element is to analyse the traffic patterns of people moving around inside the residence. Often, curved edges, rather than traditional corners, will help to keep the traffic flowing, while also allowing a maximum usage of surface area.
Lighting and the selection of materials also dramatically alter the amount of perceived space in smaller areas. I generally choose lighter coloured materials such as maple, as opposed to black walnut, because the brighter woods help to produce a more open effect.
If you have a somewhat claustaphobic zone in your home and would like to see how it can appear more spacious, I would love to have a look. Please contact me and we will see what can be done.
